Simple Secrets: Incorporating Coffee Into Cold Process Soap

The Goal:
Many of us start our day with a rich cup of hot coffee as we ponder what the day holds. It's not surprising that this coffee drinking leads to the idea of putting coffee in soap! We love the smell, and coffee gives soap a creamy brown color. In addition coffee is thought to provide unique and beneficial properties to formulas. Here's how we ran with this idea, and how we incorporated coffee in soap.

Swap Water for Coffee:
The most obvious way to include coffee into your soap formula is to swap out the water in the recipe for coffee. We recommend using strongly brewed coffee to maximize the effects of coffee in your finished product. Once you have your freshly brewed coffee made and measured for your recipe, chill it in the refrigerator. Cooling the coffee prevents the lye from burning it, turning your beautiful aromatic coffee into burnt coffee that will make you hold your nose. Once the coffee has cooled, you can add your lye slowly. (It will still have an unpleasant smell, but that odor will go away after saponification.)

Use Coffee Butter:
Coffea arabica (coffee) seed oil comes from the coffee bean plant, and is thought to stimulate collagen and elastin synthesis. Translation, it is thought to be excellent for your skin! Crafter's Choice carriers a Coffee Butter Blend with this luxurious coffee oil. We included this butter in our recipe at 10% along with other excellent butters and oils such as Cocoa Butter, Castor Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Coconut Oil 76º Melt and Palm Oil.

Finish With Coffee Additives:
Coffee additives provide extra appeal to soap; we added coffee grounds, caffeine extract and Espresso Fragrance Oil to round out our coffee bar. Soaps with a gentle exfoliant help slough off dead skin when lathering. The coffee grounds work perfectly for this! Caffeine Extract provides extra benefits to soaps, and we finish with a fragrance to further enhance the natural smell of this bar. We added all three of these additives once our soap was at light trace.
