There are 39 known species of lavender plants in the world. Most are native across most of Europe, the Mediterranean, Southern Asia and India. This shrub-like perennial loves to grow in sunny, open areas with well-drained soil. Lines of purple, blue or lilac blooms have a distinctly aromatic smell that is noticeable from several feet away.
Lavendula angustifolia is the most common lavender species.
Lavender was used by Ancient Romans in their lavish community bath houses and was later adopted by the Greeks whose bathing practices are the foundation of today’s modern spa practices. Even today it thought to invoke feelings of relaxation and calm so it is used in many bedtime rituals. Many people use a few drops tucked inside of a pillow to bring on a deep, restful sleep. Lavender Essential Oil is one of a small number of essential oils that can be applied straight to the skin.
You may ask what is Lavandin Oil? It is a hybrid between two of those 39 species, true lavender (lavendula augustifolia) and spike lavender (Lavendula latifolia). It is considered to have a stronger aroma than Lavender 40/42 and when steam distilled the plant produces more oil than lavender. It is measured by acre. It is often less expensive for perfumers and used as a substitute for traditional lavender essential oil.
When making your own essential oil blends try blending lavender oil, clove, bay, cinnamon, citronella, clary sage, geranium, patchouli, rosemary, bergamot and citrus oils.
