It is very important to educate yourself and your customers about what is in your products. Consumers are becoming more and more wary of reading labels and learning about the ingredients that make up their body care purchases, especially when purchasing handmade items. The following are some of the more common MP Soap Base ingredients.

Aloe Vera Leaf Juice - An MP Soap Base additive, thought to be soothing and moisturizing to the skin.

Buttermilk - An MP Soap Base additive, buttermilk is high in triglyceride content making it an excellent natural moisturizer.

Cocoa Butter - An MP Soap Base additive, cocoa butter is a vegetable fat extracted from the cocoa bean. Cocoa butter is thought to reduce skin dryness and improve elasticity.

Coconut Milk - An MP Soap Base additive, coconut milk is high in antioxidants as well as triglycerides, making it an excellent natural moisturizer for the skin.

EDTA - A chelating agent, EDTA counteracts the effects of hard water containing metals. EDTA binds with the metal so it doesn’t deposit on the hair or body, allowing for better product cleansing and foaming. It also combats oxidation in products creating a more stabilized shelf life.

Glycerin - A humectant and emollient used to improve the clarity of the soap and balance the moisture level in soap. It can be a natural or commercially produced ingredient. It is commonly derived from natural oils and is created as a by-product of soap.

Glyceryl Laurate - A skin-conditioning agent and emollient.

Goat Milk - An MP Soap Base additive that is high in vitamins and minerals. Goat milk contains lactic acid, which is thought to remove dead skin cells leaving behind new or fresh skin.

Hemp Seed Oil - An MP Soap Base additive that is thought to have excellent moisturizing properties. Hemp seed oil has excellent glide without being greasy and penetrates quickly - one of the “driest“ natural oils available.

Honey - An MP Soap Base additive high in natural antioxidants and antimicrobial properties.

Magnesium Chloride - A highly soluble salt extracted from brine or seawater.

Magnesium Nitrate - A hydroscopic salt, soluble in both water and ethanol.

Mango Butter - An MP Soap Base additive extracted from the kernels of mango fruit. High in stearic acid and oleic acid as well, mango butter is thought to have excellent moisturizing properties.

Methylchloroisothiazolinone - A preservative effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeast, and fungi used in water-based personal care products.

Methylisothiazoline - A preservative used in conjunction with Methylchloroisothiazolinone.

Oatmeal - An MP Soap Base additive thought to be soothing to the skin.

Pentasodium Pentetate - A chelating agent similar to EDTA, pentasodium pentetate inactivates metallic ions, providing products with clearness and stability by preventing oxidation.

Propylene Glycol - A humectant, which acts as a wetting agent for certain ingredients. It assists certain ingredients to mix with water. It is a derivative of natural gas and used in many consumer products such as food, deodorants, pharmaceuticals, lotions, and fat-free ice cream.

Shea Butter - An MP Soap Base additive extracted from the nut of the African shea (genus Vitellaria) tree and high in stearic acid and oleic acid. It provides soap formulas with hardness, stable lather and conditioning properties.

Silica - Silica is a common additive in MP Soap Bases to create the suspension of additives such as seeds, herbs and glitter.

Sodium Cocoate - A cleansing agent that is the result of saponifying coconut oil with caustic soda. It is a compound of natural materials.

Sodium Cocoyl Isothionate - A mild surfactant that is derived from coconut oil. It produces dense creamy foam. It is commercially produced using natural materials.

Sodium Laurate - The sodium salt of lauric acid.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLeS) - A very popular ingredient derived from lauric acid. Lauric acid is the main acid in coconut oil and palm kernel fatty acids and is believed to have antimicrobial properties. SLeS allows for better distribution of soap while cleansing. It is a foaming agent (increases lather), detergent (compound intended to assist with cleansing) and surfactant (lowers surface tension thus a grease cutter). SLeS aids in the rinsability of soap. It is a commercially produced ingredient.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) - A very popular ingredient derived from lauric acid. Lauric acid is the main acid in coconut oil and palm kernel fatty acids and is believed to have antimicrobial properties. SLS allows for better distribution of soap while cleansing. It is a foaming agent (increases lather), detergent (compound intended to assist with cleansing) and surfactant (lowers surface tension thus a grease cutter). SLS aids in the rinsability of soap. It is a commercially produced ingredient.

Sodium Myristate - A cleansing agent, which is the result of saponifying coconut and/or palm vegetable fatty acids with caustic soda. It is a compound of natural materials.

Sodium Oleate - The sodium salt of oleic acid.

Sodium Stearate - A cleansing agent that is the result of saponifying palm vegetable fatty acids with caustic soda. It is a compound of natural materials.

Sorbitol - A humectant that is used to improve the clarity of the soap. Sorbitol is a naturally occurring ingredient found in many edible fruits and berries, corn, even seaweed.

Tetrasodium Etidonate - A chelating agent, binds with metallic ions, providing products with stability in cleansing action.

Titanium Dioxide - A pigment used to whiten soap bases.

Triethanolamine - A pH adjuster. It aids in the clarity of the soap by neutralizing the excess free fatty acids in the soap base. It is a commercially produced ingredient.
