"Needs a thinner oil base" COMMENTS:  I found that if I only used the Soybean oil as the base that it would not spritz out of the sprayer, but instead spray in a straight stream. I altered the formula to be half the soybean oil and half MCT and it now sprays nicely. I'd suggest updating this recipe. "it works!" COMMENTS:  My brother is a real life mountain man. He goes deep into the woods nearly every day to bring back roots, berries, mushrooms, whatever. He camps out often as well. If anyone would be a tough test for this stuff, it's him. I made this kit for him to try out, having no idea how or if it would work. "Bug spray kit" COMMENTS:  This kit was very easy to make. Truly works against the mosquitos and bugs BUT it is all oil base so of course...very oily and not always convenient to carry around to use. "Amazingly Effective" COMMENTS:  I had some reservations when I first ordered this kit. At first I only ordered only one kit and gave my husband who is an avid rafter a bottle to test on a river trip. The mosquitos on the Colorado River can be RUTHLESS, but a few sprays in the air and application on the skin - they didn't bother him. Even more fantastic I was able to test the product again later this summer on the river and sure enough - those biting buggers stayed away for the most part! I was even able to convert "Only Deet Works" people into "I'll take the Non-Toxic but effective" believers! An effective bug spray doesn't need to be toxic, sticky, and pore clogging to be effective!!! t've since bought several kits to replenish my stock of products. "Works like a charm!" COMMENTS:  This kit is quite easy to do and the resulting product is fabulous! I decided to use 2 different EOs, the one that came with the kit: Lemon Eucalyptus and the other I decided on was Lavender Basil. All four of the plants, and now EOs, are hated by mosquitoes. "Wonderful!" COMMENTS:  I love this kit! Not only is it super easy but it also works! It is a little bit greasy on the skin but not an inconvenient. Being from Mississippi, mosquitos are around almost year round. This spray is a nice natural way to ward off those pesky bugs. The smells reminds me of a Citronella candle but in a delightful way. Staff Answer Soybean oil was used in this recipe because it is one of the natural oils known to repel mosquitoes. You can substitute aloe vera oil in this recipe but not the gel.
