What Is a Fragrance & Essential Oil Modifier?
The Fragrance & Essential Oil Modifier is a type of solubilizer for fragrance oils—an ingredient that helps oil-based scents blend evenly into water-based products. Since oils and water naturally separate, this modifier acts as a bridge, allowing fragrance and essential oils to mix smoothly without floating, clouding, or separating.
Unlike emulsifiers, which create creamy or milky textures, this solubilizer is designed to keep your finished product clear and stable. It's especially useful for room sprays, body splashes, and other clear liquid formulas where transparency and even scent distribution are key.
This essential oil modifier works by altering the structure of your oil-based fragrance. When mixed at the correct ratio (4 parts modifier to 1 part oil), it creates a new, water-compatible fragrance that disperses easily into water-based bases. This helps you achieve professional results with minimal effort and no surfactants required.
Directions:
Thoroughly mix 4 parts FO Modifier to 1 part oil-based FO. You have now created a new fragrance oil that will easily incorporate into water. Add 1% modified fragrance to water-based products. Depending on the desired scent level, you may add more of the modified fragrance oil to your product. If you add more than 1% please test to make sure your product performs to your expectations.

COMMENTS: Exactly what I was looking for! A small amount keeps my foaming soap, body washes and shampoos crystal clear, and doesn’t clog room sprays and facial/body mists. I’m really glad I gave this a try. I’ve replaced my poly 20 and use this exclusively now since it serves multiple functions.

"No more poly 20! Love this stuff!" |

COMMENTS: This stuff is awesome! I used this in my homemade foaming hand wash and body wash and it did thicken the soap so that was wonderful for the body wash but I had to add some water to my foaming hand wash, but not a lot more. I think I could do a 1:2 ratio vs. 1:4 ratio and still get a nice outcome, since I use goat milk and don't care about clarity (I did test this for clarity and it does work nicely). To answer any questions concerning how much of the finished product you need to add for a strong enough fragrance; I like my products to smell a little more on the strong side and I was still able to use the same amount as usual. For example if you normally add 1-2 teaspoons into an 8 oz bottle, you still only add that much of the finished mix. I end up having left over mix, which is nice since it stretches out my fragrance oils :) and bought some fragrance bottles from here to store them. Oh I also want to add that this so far hasn't clogged my foaming pumps which has also been an issue when using poly 20. Not sure I can blame the poly 20 on the clogging but the modifier really helps with the issue, so GOODBYE POLY 20!

COMMENTS: I replaced poly20 with this modifier, and I am so happy that I did! It really blends everything together and my final products are not as cloudy as it was before. You are going to have to work with this and find the right ratio with each batch. It is definitely worth being patient with!

COMMENTS: Works as directed kept my foam soap from precipitating out and kept it nice and clear. It did cause a minor acceleration/thickening of my foam soap BUT that is easily corrected by adding more distilled water to it. It lightened up the FO a bit so instead of adding the 10% recommended i added probably around 20-30% of the mixture) i usually add 1-5% of the concentrate per liquid soap batch! But other then that i like it!

COMMENTS: Essential for keeping oils from separating in products. I don't like having to put "shake before each use" on certain products because I don't think people always do and the oils end up sitting at the top of the liquid in the bottle, not giving your product it's full potential. This has worked well for me in body sprays & perfumes, room sprays and cleaning sprays as well. Keeps essential oils nicely emulsified into the base.

COMMENTS: I am formulating PC bases and using several types of solubilizers for the fragrance compatibility.
This one always has good results with clarity.
It is wise to determine the right ratio with the fragrances(depends on their type) in order to maintain the desired viscosity of the finished good ...sometimes is breaking it down the viscosity...
Overall, I find this solubilizer excellent.

COMMENTS: Ok, so I bought this based on some kits that I saw listed and some reviews. While I like what it does, there is definitely a learning curve. I used the same ratios that I saw on a kit listed. It didn't turn out bad, I just now have a product that is very concentrated. I have written down my ratios so I know how to dilute it for my final product, so no worries. It turned into a good thing. Just do your testing with any ratios to make sure that it meets you and your customers standards :-)

COMMENTS: I've had this stuff for a couple of months and just got around to using it. I wasn't too sure of how it would work based on the reviews and guess I was delaying any disappointment. Now my only regret was going so long before trying it. I love this stuff! I just blended a FO which came out great and maintained it's strength 100%. Very impressive. I then mixed a batch of fragrance and almost cursed when it came out almost milky white. After going back to the instructions and realizing that water based products need 1% modifier, I added more modifier and the batch turned clear like magic! Love, love, love this stuff!

COMMENTS: I have repeatedly tested the principle that water and oil don't mix. Okay I get it. I have had separation issues with shampoos and shower gels but no more with this modifier. I made new batches yesterday using this modifier per instructions. It's a little early to tell but I am confident no more worries with separation of water and oil components. I will NOT be without this any longer. This is something every serious bath product maker must have.

COMMENTS: I used this in making foamy soap. It's awesome!!!! The end product is a soap that is perfectly integrated with any fragrance of your choice. My choice was flower bom by victor and Rolf, haha!!! It made a beautiful foamy soap wi hardly having to use up my designer fragrance oil!!!
I bought the beautiful pumps and bottles from here (clear) and will be making my mommy friends happy come mothers day with this inexpensive and creative gift that can't be beat!!!! Btw, I mixed some dendritic salt to the victor and Rolf flower bomb scent, and then Epsom salt and added apricot kernel oil and some coconut oil to make a salt scrub, wow people, just WOW!!!!!

COMMENTS: We used this to make Bubble Gum scented Bubble Bath for our daughter and it was a total hit. Bath time was no longer a fight and the house smelled like Bubble Gum all night long. It was an easy mix for a novice user since my husband and I buy these products for our own personal use rather than for selling to the public. The instructions are simple and straight forward, pretty much idiot proof. Can't beat the price and it really does NOT change the color.
Works GREAT in the Crafters Choice Bubble Bath - Clear.
A little goes a long way too. Just enough to scent the bubble bath, doesn't dilute it, doesn't affect the bubbles any and works just as well as any of the other reviews says it does.
Tried using it in lotion as well, but did not seem to really make much of a difference in lotion with the FO.
Also plan to use in combination with Crafters Choice Multi-Spray Concentrate as well to make our own air fresheners as well. A good alternative for someone who has issues with migraines (someone such as myself) and can not handle most commercial based air fresheners. Will be leaving a review on the Multi-Spray Concentrate once I do try it with it as to how well it works with it.

I make a lot of them I love the way they smell.
when I added the fo modifier it was so cool to watch it turn clear! it worked wonders. I love the visual part of it working. love it!

I especially like how it saves me money on the manufacturing end -- this allows me to use more pricey oils but still keep the same price point. COMMENTS: When I was new to all this, I couldn't figure out why my shower gels and bubble baths (both clear bases) turned cloudy when adding fragrance oils. Actually, I thought that was just how it was supposed to be. Then I discovered this magic potion! Just mix with fragrance oils, wait a bit, add your base and voila- a clear bubble bath, body spray, etc. Love this product!
