"Great Help for Fragrancing Bath Salts" COMMENTS:  On one of the videos I watched before making my first batch of bath salts, they showed how to add essential oils/fragrance oils to a little bit of tapioca starch before adding it to the salt. They said it helped hold the fragrance in the product. It worked really well and I'll be using it in all my batches now. "It makes a difference" COMMENTS:  I like this product. I used it in lotion and it made a difference in the silkiness to customers. I love it and I can't fill orders soon enough for demand. Even men like the lotion with this in it. It is very expensive though in my opinion. You have to weigh whether you think it's worth it or not. I can say that a little goes a long ways. So I think it is for me. But I use it conservatively to keep costs down. I suggest trying it in the smallest weight bag and see for yourself. I was not disappointed. "Great product" COMMENTS:  I was hesitant about purchasing this I normally use cornstarch to cut the greasy feeling in my butters. Boy was I surprised a little goes a long way and made my butters continue to have the smoothness I was looking for without a gritty feel. Staff Answer This can be used in bath salts, yes. Poly 80 would still be necesarry to disperse the ingredients in bath water. These powders help to absorb some of the oils creating a softer powdery finish to the finished product.We recommend testing all substitutions in a small batch before making a larger batch for retail. Staff Answer The recommend usage levels are 1-50%. Tapioca starch is traditionally only used in Milk Baths. We have not tested using tapioca starch in bath salts for the purpose of absorbing the fragrance oil. You alone are responsible for product and recipe testing to ensure compatibility and safety. Technically you would be able to substitute pure tapioca starch but you will lose key benefits of the modified tapioca starch such as it being gluten free in addition to the main benefit which WSP lists which is that "modified starch is able to absorb and carry large quantities of oils (such as bath and fragrance oils)".   Posted By: Erin   |   Date: December 03, 2013 (1) Found this helpful. Staff Answer The Modified is designed to hold oils in dry products which are then released in water. The Pure is used as a talc replacement in products and imparts a smooth, soft feel to formulations. Modified tapioca starch may either be the Expandex product and contains no gluten, or it is the Azko Nobel product called 'Amaze (formerly Dry-Flow)' and contains Polymethylsilsesquioxane. "I have been using plain cornstarch in my body butters to cut the greasy feel that some customers don't like, however I've been researching & going to experiment with tapioca starch instead. Because I've found recipes using both, I'm unsure which is the one to purchase for my purpose. I only want it specifically to take away the oily feel of body butter for those that prefer a non-oily lotion type feel, (I don't offer lotion, because I don't use an preservatives.)"
